SUMMARY 

A Medical Laboratory Technician analyzes biological specimens using routine and complex instruments and manual methods; applies quality control, maintenance, and calibration procedures per standard operating procedures to provide accurate, reliable and timely information for preventing, diagnosing or treating disease; and participates in teaching students and new employees.


QUALIFICATIONS 

  • MLT certification from the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Technician or National Certification Agency is required
  • New graduates must obtain registration with the ASCP Board within 18 months of employment
  • Understands the basic clinical laboratory methodologies and recognizes factors that affect procedures and results
  • Refers problems to supervisors or medical technologist
  • No previous work experience necessary

SUMMARY

Analyzes biological specimens integrating instrument operation, maintenance, control/calibration with patient data and test results to provide accurate, reliable and timely information for preventing, diagnosing or treating disease; ensures compliance with QC and QA programs to effect the highest quality patient care; offers technical support to patient care providers; and teaches  students and new  employees.
 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certified as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists - ASCP, National Certification Agency - NCA, or Clinical Laboratory Technologists (Health Education and Welfare) - CLT(HEW) or be a graduate of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences - NAACLS accredited School of Medical Technology and registry eligible
  • No previous work experience necessary
  • New graduates or new to the state must pass certifying exam within 18 months of employment
  • Understands clinical laboratory methodologies and clinical correlation
  • Proficient in the use of the appropriate equipment
  • Understands the ethics of Medical Technology and realizes the importance of accuracy and reliability in the performance of laboratory tests
