Who We Are:

America's leading nonprofit integrated health plan, Kaiser Permanente serves more than 8.6 million people from 35 hospitals and 431 medical office buildings in nine states and the District of Columbia. Thanks to the dedication of approximately 180,600 employees and physicians, in a single year we may schedule more than 36 million outpatient visits, deliver 91,000 babies, perform 547,000 surgeries, and fill some 129 million prescriptions.

Focused on the health and well-being of our members and communities, the people of Kaiser Permanente continually elevate the state of health care with progressive products, services, and advancements. We come from many different backgrounds, but we all believe in taking a proactive role in health and well-being. That means we don't just recommend what the latest research shows, we conduct our own research. We treat our members, colleagues, and communities as family, and uphold the trust they place in us by safeguarding their privacy. We have high expectations for ourselves and each other. We believe in spreading health—online, offline, through educational programs and awareness campaigns, and through good ol' word of mouth. We practice well-care as well as sick-care, and advocate prevention as well as treatment. We discuss, debate, and shape public policy. We walk for the cure, buckle up for safety, bike for the cause, and run for the joy of it (and sometimes for that cookie we ate at lunch). We believe pink ribbons and yellow bracelets make more than fashion statements. And we believe in our power to make a difference. We are Kaiser Permanente and we stand for health. Yours. Ours. And everyone's.

When you come here, you do so knowing that the work you do saves lives. From our nurses and physicians on the front line of care to our business professionals supporting the bottom line. Everyone at Kaiser Permanente plays a vital role in the care delivery process. Because no matter who you are or what your role, the work you do at Kaiser Permanente affects lives.

It is important to sustain the trust of our members and the communities we serve by setting a high expectation for compliance, ethics, and integrity. Our diversity is our strength. And when you get down to it, this is what defines our culture. We are 180,600 individual employees and physicians, but we share a common goal: We make lives better. Whether through technology, communication, innovation, or face-to-face care delivery, what we do makes a difference. Because at the end of the day, it's all about people. That's what it means to work at Kaiser Permanente.
Diversity:

From our rich history of diversity firsts...to our sustained efforts to integrate diversity into every aspect of our daily operations, Kaiser Permanente has distinguished itself as a socially conscious leader that supports and empowers its workforce.

Diversity, inclusion, and culturally competent medical care are defining characteristics of Kaiser Permanente and the framework for our diversity consists of a Board of Directors–mandated National Diversity Agenda designed to achieve the following:
  • Grow our membership through effective market segmentation approaches that target specific populations who are the fastest-growing segments of our society.
  • Provide culturally competent medical care and culturally appropriate service to improve the health and satisfaction of our increasingly diverse membership.
  • Enhance the diversity, cultural competence, skill, and performance of our workforce.
Recruiting and cultivating diverse talent is integral to achieving our key business objectives. To consistently deliver high-quality, accessible, culturally competent care to our members and patients, it is essential that our workforce reflects the communities we serve.

Today, the Kaiser Permanente workforce reflects no racial majority, with nearly 60 percent of the workforce comprising people of color. Additionally, three-quarters of the total work force, nearly half of the executive work force, and more than one-third of the physician workforce are women. Maintaining industry-leading levels of diversity through deliberate planning, development, and outreach are critical to fulfilling our mission, sustaining our business objectives, and providing the best level of care to our members and patients.

We champion the cause of inclusive care—care that is respectful of and sensitive to the unique values, ideals, and traditions of the 140 cultures currently represented in our population. And we are committed to creating a workforce with the cultural sensitivity and the language skills needed to help eliminate cultural barriers to communication. Making good on that promise, we currently have eight centers of excellence dedicated to everything from providing 24-hour translation services to members and staff in over 100 languages to finding new ways of delivering personalized care in and beyond our walls.

At Kaiser Permanente, we stand strong. We stand united. And we stand for total health—mind, body, and spirit.

Community Outreach:

Imagine a world...where everyone has equal and affordable access to quality care. A world free of health disparities. A place where good health is a reality for all. This is our vision. Ambitious? You bet. Achievable? We absolutely believe so. And it's a goal that each and every one of our employees and physicians are working toward every day.

As a nonprofit organization, we understand that when our neighborhoods are healthy, everyone benefits. We are committed to spreading health by sharing our knowledge and assets; strengthening the safety net; promoting policies and environmental changes that advocate healthy eating and active living; providing care and coverage for low-income, uninsured, and underserved individuals; and working toward the elimination of disparities in health care. The year 2008 saw our largest investment in community benefit ever: more than $1 billion. We also continued our Charitable Health Coverage programs, which covered care for more than 100,000 members in 2008.

As our country's policymakers explore the idea of health care reform, they continue to turn to Kaiser Permanente as a model of integration, aligned incentives, and coordinated care. Why? Because our business structure ensures that we are all relentlessly focused on improving the health of our members and communities. And we couldn't be prouder.

To share just a few highlights of our community benefit, in 2008 we:
  • cared for 137,489 children through the Children's Health Insurance Plan,
  • engaged 40 communities around the country in our community health initiatives,
  • published 701 medical research studies,
  • used live drama, comedy, and music to teach 557,426 students to make smart choices about food, exercise, and sexuality,
  • and sponsored more than 35* regular farmers' markets at our medical centers and business facilities across the country.
And that's just the beginning—the story continues every second of every day.

Total Health:

More than a health care organization...at Kaiser Permanente, we see ourselves as a health advocacy organization. We are here to help you get the most out of your journey toward total health—a journey that is different for every single person we encounter.

When we talk about total health, we're definitely talking about quitting smoking, eating healthier, and exercising more. But it's more than that. Total health isn't just about action. It's about understanding the physical, mental, environmental, and intangible reasons that motivate the decisions underlying your actions, and supporting you in making positive choices.

As your proactive partner in health, we don't just tell you to eat healthier and exercise more, we make it easier to make those decisions by offering hundreds of healthy recipes online, holding farmers' markets at many of our facilities, and offering wellness classes like yoga and meditation for members, employees, and their surrounding communities. We don't just tell you to quit smoking; we offer community classes, support groups, and counseling to help you get there. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Each year, we make it our mission to spread health in and beyond our walls. We do this through employee associations, through community outreach, through event sponsorship, through innovative design and technology, through research, and through sheer passion. Total health is for our members, our communities, and our employees. And we want you to make it yours, too.
Training and Professional Development:

A huge part of staying motivated and feeling valued...comes from experiencing new things. Professional development—whether it takes the form of continued education, learning from team members, or taking your career in an entirely new direction—is a key component of life at Kaiser Permanente. Working at an organization with the size and resources of Kaiser Permanente means there's always room to try something new.

And with countless continued learning and career development opportunities, it's clear that we feel the same way. We know that to be our best, we must continually challenge ourselves to reach our goals, and then set new ones.

Ongoing learning, growth, and education are supported throughout the organization. Whether you work in the patient care environment or in customer service. Whether you're interested in honing and refining existing skills or acquiring new knowledge and experience. At Kaiser Permanente, we encourage new growth.
